  • Robert Stephenson Smyth Baden Powell Born 22nd Feb 1857,
  • Died 8th Jan 1941
  • Served with the British Army in India and Africa
  • Involved in the Zulu wars, where he obtained a necklace of wooden beads from Dinizulu.
    • The beads were used to recognize Zulu chiefs
    • BP used the beads to recognise adult leaders as they became trained
    • The process is still in use today
  • Learnt and later used the left hand shake.
    • Still in use today
  • Was a hero of Mafeking (1900)
  • 1907 – Brownsea Island Camp held with 20 boys.
  • 1908 – Scouting for Boys first published.
  • 1908 – Scouting first began in Australia.
